Campus Karnitz 2023

Fictional narratives on the Capitalocene – on “afterwards” and “thereafter”. to the “after” and “there”

In 2023, the International Summer University Fictional Narratives on the Capitalocene – on “after” and “there” will take place on the Karnitz Campus for the fifteenth time and continue our thematic series Transmedia Storytelling | Culture of Climate Change.

The invitation goes to (young) scholars from the fields of interdisciplinary research and educational approaches to sustainable development, great transformation, Anthropocene, to young artists who see art as a form of cognition of the real and to activists (as they say) who promote transformations through initiatives.

The summer university lasts 10 weeks and is organised as blended learning.

Programm

Goals

  • (Self-)understanding of the profound changes representing the epoch transformation-metamorphosis, i.e. socio-cultural and socio-economic change.
  • Shaping narratives of the Capitalocene both in terms of possible visions “afterwards” and ways “to get there”.
This is not about storytelling, but about developing stories that lead in the narrative line (story-narrative-meta-narrative-narrative) towards the new narrative.
Framing, i.e. the choice of metaphors, symbols and words, plays an essential role in this. They steer the interpretations of the recipients in the direction of narratives.
  • Development of narrative competences for science-fictional stories that can serve both science communication and artistic research and work.
  • Develop transdisciplinary communication and collaboration skills through which narratives are created collaboratively by artists, scientists and activists.

E-learning phase I, 19.06. – 10.08.2023

  • The KNOWLEDGE of the Capitalocene – (natural science/social science/humanities/philosophy), Learning to Read Theories
  • The KNOWLEDGE of storytelling, narrative theories and fictional formats
  • Via Moodle, online collaborative tools, WordPress blog and social media, inputs and reflection.
  • Presence phase, 14 – 26.08.2023 in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
  • The presence phase is the possibility space for new narratives
  • Scientifically based fictions on “after” and “there” – Creative options/possibility spaces
Exercising and challenging the sense of possibility
  • Artistic-creative fictions about “after” and “there” – ( ironic, satirical, )
  • Life in the fictions (telling, telling and telling again). Development of stories/episodes. (Writing, creating) – transmedia narratives: Texts-Forms-Sound
  • Two-day presentation symposium to discuss the results, their development processes, their consistent narrative line.
  • Initiation of contacts with film/theatre/performance projects that realise the narratives.
  • 25 – 26 8.2023 Presentation phase.

Results:

  • Episodic narratives in different formats (literary texts, screenplay, play, music pieces, film sequences, – but also objects, performance).
  • The results are presented, discussed, experienced and criticised in a two-day symposium with invited artists, academics and practitioners.
  • This will result in an essay/podcast/video on (artistic research) artistic sci-fi communication of the Anthropocene.
  • The results are the basis for transmedial productions and their expansion, which will be developed in a further phase – with support

language:
The international summer university will be held in German, with translations for foreign guests.

Learning concept + conclusion

The International Summer University is organised as a blended learning course. It runs over a period of 3 months and includes an e-learning phase and a two-week attendance phase. The object of work and design is the narrative, science-fictional representation of the Capitalocene.

Participatory structures
determine the communication and the work processes both online and on site. It is about sharing
and experiences, reflections and the joint solving of practice-oriented tasks, as well as creative
and creative productions in word, image and sound. Within the framework of a transdisciplinary and transformative research design, the design and organisation by the participants is open.
“Participation, interactivity, design competence, reflection and positive action option” are
the principles of communicating sustainability and at the same time shape the learning and
exchange processes.” (Joachim Borner, KMGNE)

The didactic and research design
links design (from a constructivist perspective) and connectivist learning and incorporates didactic
didactic approaches of Bauhaus pedagogy and transformative and artistic research.
In our case, the design aims to understand the transformations in the
of the Capitalocene.
“Transformative literacy” or competences for transformation are the meta-goals, whereby the
skills for communicating – as a collaborative literacy process and process of generating
process of generating “robust social knowledge” – are particularly emphasised.
In addition to understanding dynamic-complex systems such as climate change and climate change processes and
the search for metaphors, symbols, messages and an aesthetics of “great transformation”.
transformation”, parallel search processes determine the work:

(1) Identification and “modelling” of possible alternatives for the future by means of the
scenario method. For only when we have a robust idea of the future can we make today
make wise social decisions today that are not crisis management.

(2) The design of knowledge-based narratives using the method of design fiction. It
social spheres of action of the future are designed narratively in order to make such
cultural logics of action.

(3) The development of transmedial narrative structures that take into account the different narrative modes,
languages, media formats of use of the various types of knowledge and knowledge carriers.
knowledge carriers. (Transdisciplinarity).

Tutors, advisors, experts
accompany the processes through:

practice-oriented input,

Fascilitation of exchange and joint work, irritation of ingrained thinking styles

Reflections on the results of the work and the processes by which they were created.

The process

First e-learning phase
Teaching of approaches and theories for explaining existing realities and disturbances in the
capitalocene – human-nature-relationship (system knowledge), on guiding principles for new realities (target knowledge) and on the
shaping new realities (transformation knowledge). This phase aims at becoming competent for the appropriate
communication, especially for narratives in a competent and meaningful way.
Tasks are worked on in individual reflection, group work and peer-to-peer discussions. The
communication takes place via the forums of the learning platform, so that it is transparent and
transparent and comprehensible for all participants. Individual, collaborative contributions are published on the blog and in social networks.
social networks.

Two-week attendance phase | Plenary work and workshops
First week of the attendance phase – plenary work
The guiding questions are:

  • What is to be told of the Capitalocene, what needs to be told. How can we tell these stories to each other? How to understand them? What kind of action in the upheaval can be derived from this, what repertoire of possibilities do we have?
  • With which narrative modes – e.g. with fictional objects – can we describe the future and the transformation towards it? How can design fictions and speculative artefacts be used for narrative strategies in artistic design processes?

Design fiction uses narrative elements/objects to imagine possible futures through these fictional future diegetic prototypes in their social and ecological implications. It uses a fictional framework – e.g. in the form of scenarios to argue about a possible anthropocene future (challenges, impacts, benefits) by demonstrating this future in a socio-ecological context that a large public audience can understand and which links to social practices. Central ethical points here are worldview and human image. The narrative forms are important because only they can build an internal logic that bridges information deficits. The presence of the characters, the perspective and the narrative world create a space of possibility for the diegetic objects – even outside our routines and socio-cultural practices and rules of the game. The objects create the point of reference to the viewer/reader…allowing him to more easily understand this fictional world and its objects, to enter the bridge from the known world to the new.
(Diegesis (French diégèse’ narration, discussion, execution) is an analytical concept in narrative theory that explains whether components of the narrative form are inside or outside the narrated world (narrative level)).

Against this background, participants share knowledge and experiences, reflect on a concrete level of action, derive messages and develop scenarios. Within the framework of the meta-theme “Transmedia Storytelling | culture of climate change”, a concrete level of action is launched in each case. This enables the integration of different types of knowledge in society to interpret what climate culture could be. The aim is thus to elicit forms of interpretation: How many and which definitions ofclimate culture exist and which are usable?
This is done by drawing on rational (knowledge) and emotional insights. What is learned through a
reduction process is translated into images, metaphors and symbols. In terms of content
The content of the project relates to relevant functions of rural/urban areas: food and health care, energy and drinking water supply.
and health care, energy and drinking water supply, urban/rural areas as recreational
recreational space and a place for climate adaptation. In addition, questions on ethical concepts such as
prudence, happiness and justice as a foil for the rooms.

Second week of the attendance phase

Focus on the collaborative creative production of episodes in word, image and sound and on
bringing them together into a transmedia umbrella story in workshops/studios. We develop
scripts, stories, slogans, messages for specific formats, acquire basic media skills with professional
with professional support, acquire basic competences for the media formats, plan and
produce our own “communicates”.

Final certificate
We award 6 ECTS points for active participation in exchange, discussion and collaboration web-based and on-site as well as successful completion of the assignments.
